Pivotals decline late; Sensex up a tad to 4144.52

After a firm start, pivotals lost their initial gains towards the fag end of trading in a dull trading on the Bombay Stock Exchange today.

According to dealers, volume of business was very thin due to limited participation by players and institutional investors.

Rumours that an Indian aircraft was shot down by Pakistani forces caused panic in the market, a leading BSE broker said.

The 30-share BSE Sensex opened firm at 4156.62 points, touched the day's high of 4186.35 points, a low of 4120.73 points, before closing at 4144.52 points, showing a marginal gain of 3.79 points from the previous close of 4140.73 points.

The broad-based BSE-100 index, however, declined moderately by 7.21 points to 1783.30 points as against the previous close of 1790.51 points.

''Most of the leading players and foreign fund managers have adopted a wait-and-watch attitude due to the ongoing Kargil conflict and therefore there is not much activity witnessed in the market,'' said another BSE member.

The BSE-200 and Dollex indices closed lower by 1.77 and 0.75 points to 407.79 and 156.51 points as against the previous close of 409.56 and 157.26 points respectively.

Reliance topped the list of turnover by registering the day's highest turnover of Rs 1.17 billion, followed by Ranbaxy Labs Rs 945.8 million, Satyam Computers Rs 871.2 million, Pentafour Software Rs 728.1 million.

Other actively traded counters were SBI (Rs 728.1 million), ITC (Rs 457.6 million), Tisco (Rs 439.5 million), L&T (Rs 395.6 million), MTNL (Rs 338.9 million), NIIT (Rs 311.7 million), Hindalco (Rs 292.7 million), Digital Equipment (Rs 274 million), Infosy Technologies (Rs 228.4 million) and Hindustan Lever (Rs 199.9 million).
