MUL posts 17.2 pc rise in FQ sales

Maruti Udyog Limited's passenger car sales recorded a 17.2 per cent surge during the first quarter of the current fiscal, while retails during June were 27.3 per cent higher than the same month previous year.

According to a senior company official, sales during the first quarter this year stood at 87,143 units as against 74,385 units a year ago, while during June 1999, the company sold 24,578 passenger cars, up from 19,314 units in the same month last year.

Incidentally, despite a ban on sales of its Omni van in the national capital region, sales for the vehicle recorded a 105 per cent growth during June 1999 to close at 5,322 units as against 2,591 units a year earlier. The company sold 12,164 units of Maruti 800 in the month, up 15.9 per cent from 10,488 units a year ago while Zen sales were up 27.5 per cent at 5,731 units from 4,492 units in the same month last year.

Sales of its three-box cars (Esteem and Maruti 1000), however, dropped 21.9 per cent year-on-year to touch 1,361 units in June this year from 1,743 units a year ago, the official added. During the first quarter this fiscal, Maruti sold 45,426 units, up 12.8 per cent from 40,237 units in the same quarter last fiscal. Omni sales were up 45.9 per cent during the period from 12,963 units to 18,914 units while Zen retails clocked 18,645 units, up 12.8 per cent.

The company sold 4,158 units of its three-box cars during the quarter.
