PC penetration has grown to 1.8 PCs per thousand persons from the previous year's penetration of 1.53 PCs per thousand persons.

The home and business segments have been major contributors to the total PC market with about 20 per cent and 80 per cent, respectively.

These findings are a part of the research released by MAIT titled 'IT Industry Performance Study 1997-98', the first of its kind by an industry association.

This research was commissioned by MAIT and conducted by the Indian Market Research Bureau across 23 major cities.

The study's respondents include business categories. Computers including desktop PCs, notebooks, servers, printers and other peripherals such as keyboards, monitors and uninterrupted power supply equipment.

Releasing the findings of the study MAIT President Manu Parpia said he is extremely happy to witness the desktop PC market grow well despite the adverse economic pressures on the industry.

"In fact, this growth is indicative of the latent potential OS segments such as the home market and small office, which are yet to witness their optimum growth. We estimate that with the implementation of the ISP policy, the demand for PCs will more than double within a year and fuel immense growth in the industry.
