Intel presents the future of business computing

What a snitch! What a snitch! Tata Communications is the first cellular operator in the country to implement a fraud management solution to combat security pestilence on their network.

Email this story to a friend. After extensive evaluation of multiple solutions from vendors the world over, Tata Cellular settled on Wipro Teleprobe, a locally produced fraud management application. It has been developed in-house by Wipro Infotech for customised use by telecom service providers.

The software, Wipro Teleprobe, allows the operator to track a subscriber's calling pattern in near real-time, detect potentially fraudulent calling activity, alert the service provider of such events and allow taking a variety to actions.

"We have incorporated artificial intelligence capabilities into Wipro Teleprobe to allow for more complex and predictive call-pattern analysis so that the service providers stay one step ahead of the criminal," said B Prashanth, product manager for Wipro Teleprobe.

Fraud, especially subscription fraud, is all about subscribers joining a network under a fictitious identity, using the services for as long as possible, running up huge bills and then disappearing with no intention of paying.

It is estimated that bad debts due to fraud are anywhere in the range of 8-10 per cent of revenue. The estimate of expected losses due to telecommunications fraud in 1998 is more than $4.5 billion.
