Cheap Indo-Nepalese phone links set up

Towns on either side of the Indo-Nepalese border will shortly have direct phone links under an agreement that was concluded between the top telecom authorities of the two countries.

A two-day meeting of officials from the Indian Department of Telecommunications and the Nepal Telecommunications Corporation has decided to begin operating the first phase of an optical fibre link between the south-eastern Nepali industrial township of Biratnagar and Bihar's town of Jogbani by June this year.

Similar links will later be established between the south-central 'gateway to Nepal' of Birgunj and Raxaul, Kakarbhitta, in eastern Nepal and Panitanki in the Indian state of West Bengal.

Links will also be switched between Nepal's Bhairhwa, Nepalgunj and Mahendranagar and Uttar Pradesh's Nautanwa and Rupaidia and Banbasa respectively.

The phone links will enable people from one town to call another across the international border at a rate well below the prevailing international tariff.
