Satphones to link 500 remote villages

Email this story to a friend. The government has decided to put satellite telephones in about 500 villages over 1999 and 2000.

These village public telephones would be provided in remote and inaccessible areas where other technologies are made impractical.

The satellite facility is to be provided by Inmarsat, a consortium of several governments.

Six such telephones would be put on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Calls made from these telephones would be charged at the normal rate applicable for village public telephones provided through other technologies.

Of these, 87 village public telephones may be installed in the remote and international border areas of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Rajasthan besides Assam and some other northeastern regions.
