Compaq leads in PC market. HCL is close secondCompaq India has garnered 7.7 per cent market share to occupy the top slot closely followed by HCL Limited with 7.5 per cent in the Indian desktop and PC server markets for the first half of the current calendar year, according to the latest International Data Corporation report.Zenith occupied the third slot with 6.9 per cent share while IBM and Hewlett-Packard were the fourth and fifth rankers respectively with 4.4 per cent market share each, the report added.
IBM shipped 21,776 units and HP sold 21,724 units during the period under review. In terms of value, Compaq again leads with total value of shipments at $84 million or 14.8 per cent market share. But IBM is second at 8.3 per cent market share or $47.2 million. In desktops and notebooks, Compaq has taken over the number one spot in terms of units during April-June 1999, in addition to achieving the highest revenues in this market space. Given the fact that Compaq has been the leader in this market in value terms, this is the first time it has established leadership in unit shipment terms. Compaq has a 7.7 per cent market share of its nearest competitor Zenith. And a 13.1 per cent market share by value in commercial desktops as compared to the 6.9 per cent market share of IBM, its nearest competitor. In the total PC server business, Compaq notched up a 30.3 per cent share by units shipped and 36.3 per cent by value of shipment, as compared to a market share of 16.9 per cent by unit shipments and 19.3 per cent by value of shipments of its nearest competitor, IBM Limited.
