Microsoft Corporation has clarified that its Windows 2000 software will ship with the full 128-bit encryption to India.

Earlier, India was to receive a less secure version, with 40-bit encryption instead of 128-bit due to sanctions imposed by the US government. The change due to recent changes made to the US Exports Regulations by the Bureau of Export Administration, US Department of Commerce on January 14.

The Bureau of Export Administration reviews any strong encryption product before it is exported.

If the product is classified a "retail encryption product", it will be eligible for export to all end-users. Otherwise it will be exportable only to non-government end-users. Under the new set of rules, Windows 2000 has now been classified as "retail".
