New 'technology parks' policy on the anvil

The Department of Electronics is formulating a policy to encourage setting up 'hi-tech parks' in the country and put India on the world information technology map, DoE Secretary Shyamal Ghosh said in New Delhi today.

"We are at present discussing what initiatives must be given to Indian players for setting up these parks. The department is also analysing the incentives given by other nations in this regard," Ghosh said while inaugurating the 'National Conference on Preparing for IT Agreement-Building, a competitive IT industry', organised by the Manufacturers Association of Information Technology.

The draft policy is expected to be ready in two months, he added. Besides, the department is also working out a plan to facilitate national infrastructure and increase computer penetration.

"We have shortlisted a few basic necessities to emerge successful which includes having a high-speed network backbone in place," Ghosh said.

Moreover, there is also a need to open up the Internet services business to private players. Having a large number of Internet providers would bring down prices and benefit the consumers, he agreed.

He also called for localisation of software and increasing computerisation in government offices. If these steps are in place then the volumes will go up and costs will come down, Ghosh said.
