India's tera flops supercomputer is on the wayIndia's fastest computer, capable of making 100 billion calculations per second, is on the way. With a new model of the Param supercomputer, whose power can be scaled up to 10 times, India is poised to become the third country in the world to posses such an advanced machine.Just this year, the US and Japan unveiled supercomputers with a powers of 1 tera flops or 1,000 giga flops (1 giga flops is 1 billion floating point operations per second, a unit to measure the speed of computing). Pune's Centre of Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) is working at a feverish pace to produce India's first supercomputer with tera flops architecture by March next year - six months ahead of schedule. The new Param open-frame model, with a computing power of 100 giga flops, scaleable up to 1,000 gigaflops or 1 teraflop, will make India the third country in the world to have such a machine. It is expected to find wide application in long-range weather forecasting, seismic data processing, oil prospecting, remote sensing data, launch vehicle simulation and drug design, according to Dr Vijay P Bhatkar, executive director of C-DAC. It would be the largest supercomputer in Southeast Asia. |
