AMD coming to IndiaAdvance Micro Devices, till recently playing catch-up with Intel, plans to set up an office in India.AMD, relegated to second choice, is now spreading its wings after beating Intel with its cheaper and comparatively faster K6 chip. The California-based microprocessor company plans to focus on marketing the K6 and improving the distribution structure. Currently, they have just three distributors in India, all based in New Delhi. The company is specially looking at the unbranded sector where low prices make a big difference. AMD hopes to work with the unbranded reseller segment by establishing a good distribution network in the second half of this year. It also plans to push the AMD reseller programme around the same time. AMD plans to open its own India office within six to nine months. A company official said the company hopes to produce 30 per cent of the market up to June. He said the company expected the AMD to have more demand over time since it was cheaper than most comparable Intel chips. To ensure K6 acceptability, the company plans to market the chip to government agencies and management information systems managers of corporate setups. |
