Rs 850-million computer education project launched

The project aims at directly improving learning in computer-related subjects in 14 engineering colleges and 18 polytechnics spread around the country.

The project is the first initiative of the kind in the country and has become possible by the government's support of Rs 40 million, a Swiss Development Corporation grant of $12.5 million and a World Bank loan of $8 million.

"The basic idea," said V B Taneja, DoT director, "is to improve the quality of learning material available and to improve linkages between educational institutions and industry."

This means the production of 54 select courses in modular form to improve professional capabilities of teachers and staff and improvement of laboratories and other facilities.

Taneja said the scheme enables students to spend some time in the industry in order to understand and solve practical problems.

The students will also benefit from seminars conducted by internationally renowned experts.
