Govt to offer computerised 'competition helpline'

The computer is coming to your rescue if you are stuck for want of information to launch a business venture, compete for a top government job or, say, file your maiden tax returns.

A helpline, expected to be available in New Delhi by the yearend under instructions from the cabinet secretariat, is aiming to demonstrate the government's responsiveness to the needs of the citizens in the ever more competitive environment, official sources said.

It will dispense bare facts and procedures of diverse government schemes free of cost through a chain of 'computerised facilitation counters' to be installed at various buildings housing central ministries and departments in Delhi.

But the prospectus, application forms and other relevant documents will be sold for a fee.

The sources say a software package of central schemes is being currently developed by the National Informatics Centre which will also provide personal computers to be installed at the facilitation counters.

Sources say that the first of such facilitation counters will be set up at Sanchar Bhavan, headquarters of the Department of Telecommunications, to provide access for enterprises such as value-added services to prospective investors.

At a meeting last month, DoT briefed its territorial circles to set up such counters at their headquarters by the yearend deadline, the sources say, the counters will also be installed at all public sector units.
