Infosys reins in Y2K projects

Sources explain Infosys wants to insulate itself from any major changes in the marketplace so as to ensure a balanced growth.

"We want to minimise Infosys' dependence on any single customer, technology and application area. As a part of this strategy, the company has decided to limit the contribution from In2000, the company's solution to the $300-billion Y2K projects, to its total sales," the sources said.

On the other hand the company has decided to fix the three most important areas - software development, software maintenance and re-engineering and development of Internet-related expertise - as the high-leverage areas for Infosys' research and development in the coming year.

Revealing the benefits that the company derived last year as a result of spending Rs 74.3 million in its research and development (which accounts to 5.17 as a percentage of total revenue), the sources said the research undertaken in software re-engineering provided the basis for the In2000 service.

"This research has also contributed to the PorteNT service that has been created to port the existing applications on OS/2 to the Windows NT platform. The initiatives of Infosys, like high-value Internet consulting, the Web-Setu tools and Bank Away application, are due to the R&D efforts related to the Internet. The roadmap of BANCS 2000 is being decided based on the research into the Internet commuting paradigm," the sources said, and added that Infosys had completed around 165 installations of BANCS 2000 as of March this year. Last year, the company's revenue from BANCS increased by over 83 per cent over the previous year.

The company last year developed the Web-Setu suite of products, which allow the development and deployment of mission-critical applications over the Internet. In addition, it had developed tools that aid in the automation of the In2000 and PorteNT services.
