Goa's software park coming up rapidly

Goa Minister for Industries Luizinho Faleiro has said that an ambitious plan of establishing a software technology park in Verna, South Goa, would soon be a reality as the first phase of the Rs 25 million, 3,000 square metres project is in the final stages of completion.

Rakesh Mehta, secretary, industries, and Dewang Mehta, former director, National Association of Software and Service Companies, were present on the occasion.

Faleiro told reporter at Panjim today that the proposal for the promotion of software industry in Goa had been mooted to absorb the right type of manpower.

He said that once the first phase becomes operational it would provide employment to 200 software professionals and 50 supporting staff.

Faleiro said a memorandum of understanding has been signed with the Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited for establishing an earth station for satellite communication and allied services. Work on the station is scheduled to be completed in March 1998.

The second phase, comprising two units, is estimated to cost Rs 50 million, he said.

Faleiro said that NASSCOM has proposed to organise an international convention of software manufacturers in Goa in March 1998.

The aim of the symposium, he said, is to expose Goa as an ideal locale for the software industry. The entire project, he said, would create an avenue of employment to about 1,000 youths, over next two to three years.

Mehta said the software industry in India is developing at a phenomenal rate. NASSCOM, he said, acts as a catalyst for the industry's growth.

He said NASSCOM is working to identifying centres that have the scope and prerequisites for promoting the software industry and Goa could be converted into a Silicon Valley.

He pointed out that the state had a high percentage of English speaking people, a conducive atmosphere for software development and availability of data links, besides access by air.

Software development involves mission-oriented hi-tech expertise. It also involves development of applications software, apart from basic work of computerising office management. Goa has the potential to develop all the three areas of the software industry, he claimed.
