Statistical highlights of the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup match between South Africa and West Indies in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
- It was the first ever Twenty20 international match between the two countries.
- South Africa registered their third win, equalling the tallies of Pakistan (3 out of 4) and Australia (3 out of 5).
- South Africa (208 for 2) registered their highest ever total, eclipsing their 201 for four against Australia in Johannesburg in February last year.
- The match aggregate of 413 runs for eight wickets is a new record in Twenty20 internationals, obliterating the 401 for 15 between West Indies and England at The Oval in June.
- The game witnessed the first ever totals of 200-plus by both the sides -- West Indies 205-6 and South Africa 208-2.
- Chris Gayle (117 off 57 balls) became the first ever batsman to post a hundred in Twenty20 internationals, bettering Ricky Ponting's 98 not out off 55 balls against New Zealand.
- Gayle's 10 sixes is also a new record, eclipsing the previous best of five sixes each recorded by Australians Ricky Ponting, Damien Martyn, Adam Gilchrist and Bangladesh's Nazimuddin.
- Gayle set another record, which virtually went unnoticed. His feat of 88 runs through boundaries -- ten sixes and seven fours -- is another record, surpassing Ricky Ponting's 62 (8 fours and 5 sixes) against New Zealand at Auckland in February 2005 and Nazimuddin's 62 (8 fours and 5 sixes) against Pakistan at Nairobi earlier this month.
- The 145-run partnership between Gayle and Dwayne Smith is the best ever stand for any wicket in Twenty20, eclipsing the previous best of 132 (unbroken) for the first wicket between Graeme Smith and Loots Bosman for South Africa against Pakistan at Johannesburg in February.
- The twelve sixes is a West Indian Indian record in Twenty20 internationals and the second best, behind Australia's 14.
- The eighteen sixes in the match -- 12 for West Indies and 6 for South Africa -- equalled the record for most sixes in a match. The Pakistan-Bangladesh game at Nairobi earlier this month also witnessed 18 sixes.
- Herschelle Gibbs' 90 off 55 balls is his highest individual score for South Africa, beating Graeme Smith's unbeaten 89 against Australia at Johannesburg in February last year.
- Graeme Smith, with his 28, took his aggregate to 287 (average.71.75) in six innings -- the most by any player in this format of the game.
- Shaun Pollock (4-0-52-1) recorded the worst ever figures by a South African bowler.
- The 120-run undefeated partnership between Gibbs and Justin Kemp is the best for the third wicket in Twenty20.
- The 28 extras conceded by West Indies is a new record in Twenty20 Internationals.
- The 23 wides in South Africa's innings is also a new record, eclipsing the 15 conceded by West Indies at The Oval in June.
