The Congress on Sunday alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party distributed saris in a key constituency in Delhi to influence voters to vote for Union minister Vijay Goel.
The Delhi police seized 12 saris that were allegedly being distributed in a slum cluster in the Delhi Sadar constituency and detained a policeman attached to Goel as a personal security officer and two slum-dwellers.
The police also registered a case and sent a report to the returning officer in this connection, sources said.
Goel's PSO Devendra Singh was accused of being involved in the distribution of saris and an inquiry had been ordered against him, they said.
Goel denied his involvement, saying it was a ploy of the Congress.
He said he was passing by the area when "some Congress workers started stoning my vehicle".
"I sent my PSO Devendra Singh to nab the culprits but he was overpowered by them and falsely accused of distributing saris on my behalf," Goel said.
The police raided the slum colony situated on Roshanara Road in Subji Mandi area of the constituency and seized the saris from a man and a woman and detained them.
The raid was conducted after Congress candidate Jagdish Tytler lodged a complaint that Goel was distributing saris, the sources said.
