Scene-stealers

All right, gals, guys, all. The votes are cast and, handed a mixed-up mandate, the politicians are trying to clump together their unwieldy coalitions. Time, one would say, for us to indulge some serious relaxation, wot? So here we go:

Karisma Kapoor. Click for bigger pic!

Karisma Kapoor and Salman Khan may have little to do with politics, but their presence in Kolhapur paled the glamour of a Bal Thackeray meeting being held there on the same day. And the people were coming in, despite having to pay through their noses for the privilege.

"I never realised we would get such a rousing reception there," said Karisma. "I had never performed in a small town before and it was nice to know that the people there love you so much."

Thackeray might have smiled benignly at that, if it wasn't his audience the stars were drawing from.

Mineral man

Vinod Khanna. Click for bigger pic!
There are rumours of the more job opportunities being available in Gurdaspur, we hear, if Bisleri opens a new plant there. And if water is truly distilled there, the locals must thank Vinod Khanna, who promised to stay there if he won the election. He did, and considering the number of bottles of the mineral water he and his entourage has been putting away, the company's assured of brisk business if he completes his part of the contract.

Meanwhile, Shatrughan Sinha appeared to have some maxillofacial problems when appeared along with Laloo Prasad Yadav on Doordarshan. When Yadav was answering, the face of our Bihari babu twisted, his eyes rolled up in his head, and the unit beyond his neck jerked around as if prey to palsy. Others tell us he was just looking amused.

But you have to give it to Shatru -- he's got the hang of repartee like few have. Like just after Laloo waved a hand in his general direction and said he was from a different field and so had little experience, Shatru had his reply handy. Yes, he admitted, he was from the film world, Laloo wasn't; Laloo had gone to jail, he hadn't...

Even Laloo cracked a smile at that one.

Impressive debuts

Sraboni Mukherjee. Click for bigger pic!
You may remember some controversy over whether Mahima should have been picked for a Filmfare award. Now the argument is about the Zee Cine awards that prided itself on its democratic ways.

For some reason, people like Sapna Bedi and Sraboni Mukherjee, both of whom had insignificant maiden appearances in Border, were picked for the best debut performances. Now it appears unlikely that they were picked by the audience, which hardly saw them anyway.

Rahul and the Ms World

Aishwarya Rai. Click for bigger pic!
The latest from former Miss World Aishwarya Rai is that she and cricketer Rahul Dravid are moving around together. Or that is what her friends say. Cupid, who has a hectic time in Bollywood, struck again. Ash, it seems, has called up Rahul thrice in Bangalore after she met him at the Screen awards function where he handed her the trophy for the best newcomer.

After the function got over, both of them had long and involved conversation, praising each other mindless.

According to a close friend of Ash, Rahul told Ash she was the most beautiful woman ever in the history of Indian cinema... And more mush on those lines, some of which should have your ears burning.

Love in the afternoon

Poonam Dhillon. Click for bigger pic!
Poonam Dhillon, who recently split with producer Ashok Thackeria, is another actress who is cozying up to a cricketer, name of Arjuna Ranatunga, according to one journo who also broke the thing between Vivian Richards and Neena Gupta..

Anyway, Ms Dhillon, following in the illustrious tradition of movie heroines who've diligently played mascot at the games their partners play, was also seen at stadia where the Sri Lankan appeared in India.

Proof, it appears, of the wooing.
