Rajan Pillai death: Advani rejects probe plea

Home Minister L K Advani has rejected the demand by Opposition members for setting up an inquiry into the conspiracy angle of the custodial death of biscuit king Rajan Pillai.

Replying to a half-hour debate on the Leila Seth Commission, Advani assured members that he will hold informal discussions on the matter with the Delhi government.

He said the Commission which was set up to inquire into the conspiracy angle did not find any conclusive evidence. The Commission had issued advertisements in the newspapers seeking public help in the matter. Pillai's widow, Nina, had earlier stated that she would provide evidence about the conspiracy angle, but later she refused to name the conspirator.

Advani said there have been systemic changes at the Tihar jail after the Commission submitted its report. There is now a 24-hour attendance by doctors. There were 16 doctors earlier; now there are 75 doctors. Initial medical check up has been made imperative.
