E-Mail this information to a friend

ATLANTA -- The American Society for Engineers of Indian Origin are hosting Dr Shamkant B Navathe on December 4 at 1.30 pm.

Database technology is currently faced with a major challenge in terms of an emerging breed of applications. At the same time, it is also saddled with a heavy investment in applications and databases developed with the legacy database models and systems.

In this talk, Dr Navathe will trace the database evolution and discuss new product trends and application challenges. The talk will highlight some research areas in which he has been involved.

Dr Navathe is a professor at the College of Computing, and head of the database research group at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta. He holds a joint appointment with the Dupree College of Management as well. He is well known for his work on database modeling, database conversion, database design, distributed database allocation, and database integration. He has applied modeling and design ideas to engineering and biological database management.

Dr Navathe, who holds a Ph D from the University of Michigan, has worked with IBM and Siemens in their research divisions and has been a consultant to various companies including Digital, CCA, HP and Equifax. He was the general co-chairman of the 1996 International VLDB (Very Large Data Base) conference in Bombay.

He has been an associate editor of ACM Computing Surveys, and IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering. He is also on the editorial boards of Information Systems (Pergamon Press) and Distributed and Parallel Databases (Kluwer Academic Publishers). He is an author of the book, Fundamentals of Database Systems with R Elmasri. It is currently the leading database text-book worldwide.

The talk will be held at the Montgomery Knight Building (Aerospace Engineering Building) on Georgia Tech Campus.
