NDC briefs Sharief on 'post-nuclear South Asia'

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharief was given six presentations on as many vital subjects on 'Post-Nuclear South Asia' for nearly two hours at the National Defence College on Wednesday, said a report in The Nation.

These presentations related to the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, Fissile Material Cut-off Treaty, trade with India, Kashmir, scope of Pakistan's trade with Central Asian Republics and Pakistan's economic condition.

The six groups, which made the presentations, included civil and military officers from Pakistan and friendly countries including Egypt.

Chief of the Army Staff General Pervez Musharraf and chiefs of the Pakistan Navy and Air Force were also present on the occasion

Later, in an informal chat with the military leadership, Sharief said Pakistan had every right to defend itself. ''Pakistan wants peace and stability in South Asia. But, in case of aggression Pakistan will give exemplary punishment to the aggressor,'' he said.

He said that the people of Pakistan have full faith in the capabilities of their armed forces and in case of aggression, the entire Pakistani nation will back them.

Sharief also apprised those present of his contacts with US President Bill Clinton and other world leaders.
