Secrets of Film-MakingA P Kamath in San Francisco With nearly a dozen Indian film-makers working on mainstream feature films and documentaries, there is clearly increasing interest in cinema as a career. The Indo-American Community Service Center has organized a workshop, 'Getting into Film-Making,' that's aimed at young film-makers on November 7, from 1100 hours to 1400 hours. This introductory seminar consists of a brief introduction to the various aspects of film-making and answers some basic questions: 'What does it take to take an original story or idea and turn it into a film?' 'Why are films so expensive? 'What does a director really do?' 'Who can make a film?' 'How to tell a story with no words?' 'Where can one learn to make a film?' 'Where do one get the camera and film stock?' 'How much training do one need?' 'Where does one get hands-on experience?' Aparna Malladi,, who has been learning how to make films at the Film Arts Foundation in San Francisco for the last two years, will conduct the three-hour long seminar and workshop. She is the recipient of the STAND (Support and Training for New Directors) grant from the FAF. She is currently in pre-production of her debut film, which is being co-sponsored by ICSC. The event will be held at 3065 Democracy Way, Santa Clara. The ICSC is also organizing Children's Day on November 21 with an art exhibition, which opens at 1000 hours, followed by a contest at 1100 hours and between 1500 hours and 1900 hours, and a veena concert by Raja Sivamani. It will be held at the Milpitas Senior Ctr-160 N Main Street.
