WASHINGTON

As India closes the last polling stations in the nation's third election in three years, observers wonder if India's next government will be successful in addressing India's pressing economic concerns and resolving disputes with Pakistan.

The Asia Society has organized a talk on October 5, at 6.40 pm under the Contemporary Affairs series.

K Shankar Bajpai, former Indian ambassador to the United States (1984 to 1986), will assess India's domestic and foreign policy objectives and offers his perspectives on India's nuclear doctrine, the pitfalls India's government must maneuver and the advantages India's policymakers must maximize to ensure stability and progress.

Bajpai is a career diplomat who has also served as India's ambassador to the Netherlands (1975), Pakistan (1976 to 1980) and China (1980 to 1982). He recently accompanied the Indian foreign minister to the UN General Assembly session.

The talk will be given at the Asia Society in Washington, DC.

Asia Society members will be charged $ 7, and non-members $ 11. Full-time students with ID pay $ 9. Light refreshments follow the lecture. Reservations required by noon, Monday, October 4.

For information, call (202) 833.2742; payment accepted at the door.
