Diasporadics Program Is Finalized

Diasporadics, a festival focusing on arts and activism in South Asian communities in the US, has announced the schedule of events.

The organizers want to bring together artists and activists who are interested in using arts as a vehicle for social change.

The festival, the organizers say, is committed to a progressive politics rooted in creativity. This event is organized to address the pressing need for a community forum which uses the arts to support critiques of, and resistance against, social structures which marginalize and disenfranchise individuals based on their class, race, gender, sexuality, nationality, religion, age, and physical ability.

The events are scheduled for September 17 to 19 at the Brecht Forum, 122 W 27th St, New York.

Friday, September 17
7 pm -- registration
8 pm -- an evening of readings, screenings and performances.

Saturday, September 18
10:30 am to noon -- Against the Grain: The Creative Process and Progressive Politics.
Laboring Art / Provoking Images: Organizing Around Immigrant Struggles in NYC.
Beyond Tradition: New Perspectives in South Asian American Music.
5:30 pm to 7 pm --Visual Arts Reception, with Amita Bhatt, Nisha Kunte, Rina Banerjee, Swati Khurana, Leith Murgai and Shefali Mehta.
8 pm -- Evening Performances, Readings and Video.

Sunday, September 19
1 pm to 2:30 pm -- Marks of Resistance: Communities Confronting Hate Crimes and Police Brutality.
3 pm to 4:30 pm -- Drawing the Lines: The Politics of Representation.

Tickets for the evening programs cost $&nsbp;10 - $&nsbp;6 (sliding scale); $&nsbp;10 for the dance party; an all-weekend pass (including party) costs $&nsbp;30. The panels and workshops are free though donations are welcome.
