PM did not promise roll back: Ram Naik

Petroleum Minister Ram Naik on Thursday reiterated his stiff opposition to any roll back of the oil price hike and discounted reports that the prime minister had assured Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee of a five per cent reduction in the hike.

Addressing a crowded press conference in Madras, he said the prime minister had only asked Banerjee not to press for her resignation.

Vajpayee had assured her to have a re-look of the price front on his return from Bombay on October 11 after his knee surgery, Naik pointed out.

Stating that any roll back would disturb the delicate balance worked out by his ministry, he, however, said it was for the prime minister to take a final decision in the matter.
