Rajendra Singh, an activist from Alwar, Rajasthan, who has done pioneering work in water management, was on Monday named the winner of the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership, 2001.
The Magsaysay Awards are widely seen as Asia's version of the Nobel Prizes.
The other winners this year are Ikuo Hirayama of Japan, Wu Qing and Yuan Longping of China, K W D Amaradeva of Sri Lanka, Dita Indah Sari of Indonesia and Oung Chanthol of Cambodia.
Hirayama was awarded the prize for peace and international understanding for his work as a UNESCO goodwill ambassador. Wu, a deputy in the Beijing Municipal Congress, won the prize for public service for helping to empower women. Yuan won the award for developing high-yielding hybrid rice.
