Eight militants, including five belonging to Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Tayiba, were killed and a woman injured in separate encounters in Jammu and Kashmir since Wednesday night, official sources said Thursday.
On specific information that a large number of militants were hiding in Zarnar in Kupwara district, the army launched an operation and in the ensuing encounter five LeT militants were killed, the sources said.
Meanwhile, the operation launched in Sonapindi Gali in Kupwara on Wednesday following an attempt by militants to sneak into Kashmir valley from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir ended Wednesday night with the killing of another intruder. In all, four Pakistani intruders were killed in the operation.
The sources said the four-member group belonged to Tehreek-i-Jehad-i-Islami. Two of the deceased militants have been identified as Zahid Maqbool of Muzaffarabad and Sahil Talab Khan of Pakistan.
A police spokesman said two foreign militants were killed by the security forces in Kalaroos area of Kupwara district Thursday, adding that the Border Security Force shot dead a Hizbul Mujahideen militant in Badgam district Wednesday evening.
Unidentified gunmen also shot dead a civilian and injured a woman in separate attacks at Warpora and Tarzoo in Baramulla district Wednesday night, the spokesman said.
Meanwhile, two LeT militants were arrested by the Special Operations Group from Beehama in Ganderbal on the outskirts of Srinagar Wednesday.
The SOG also arrested a militant of the Islamic Front, Manzoor Ahmad Ganai from Kaw Mohalla area.
