Salem was detained at the Sharjah airport on Wednesday on the basis of a 'Red Corner' notice issued by Interpol at the request of India following his alleged involvement in various criminal activities.
CBI sources said on Friday night that the agency was in touch with the Dubai police, which is the representative of Interpol in the UAE.
The sources said there was no confirmation from them about the arrest so far.
It may be mentioned that Salem had been picked up earlier in the late 90s also in one of the emirates of the UAE. Despite the Indian government's request for his extradition, he was deported to Dubai from where he had come.
The sources said any further action for his extradition would begin only after there was a formal intimation from the authorities in the UAE.
The CBI had secured a 'Red Corner' notice against Salem from the Interpol in several cases, including for his alleged involvement in terrorist acts and cases of murder and extortion in Bombay.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal said the state government was coordinating with the Union government with regard to Salem's extradition.
