Israeli army withdraws from Bethlehem

Ending a 10-day invasion, and finally bowing to intense international pressure, Israel on Sunday night completed the withdrawal of its armed forces from Bethlehem and Beit Jala in the West Bank, an agency report quoting an Israeli army spokesman said.

The invasion left some 20 people dead.

"Our forces pulled out of the positions they had been occupying in the Bethlehem sector for about 10 days," the spokesman was quoted as saying.

"The withdrawal was preceded by a meeting during which the two parties reached agreement on Palestinian responsibility for maintaining calm in the region," the spokesman was further quoted as saying.
