Close on the heels of the United States and the European Union pressing Pakistan to see that Jammu and Kashmir assembly election is not disrupted, India on Friday asked Islamabad to ensure that there was no violence in the state by 'cross-border forces in the run-up to the poll process'.
"It is incumbent upon Pakistan to ensure that violence and terrorism is not generated, created or fomented before the election," external affairs ministry spokesperson Nirupama Rao told reporters.
"The onus is on Pakistan to ensure that there is no violence created in J&K by cross-border forces, by cross-border terrorism and by infiltration of terrorist elements in the run-up to the election," she said.
This was the point underlined very emphatically at the recently concluded ASEAN Regional Forum and the post-ministerial meeting in Brunei and in statements by the US Secretary of State Colin Powell and the EU, she said.
The Election Commission on Friday announced a four-phased assembly election in the state beginning on September 16.
