Four heavily armed unidentified gunmen entered the Christian missionary school complex catering to children of expatriates at Gharyal village in Murree, 70 kms from Islamabad, and fired indiscriminately.
The assailants came on motorcycles, fired indiscriminately and escaped into the woods nearby, a local district official said adding that two guards and four staff members of the school were killed in the shootout that occurred at noon.
Private security guards of the school retaliated and there was an exchange of fire for nearly 20 minutes before the gunmen fled.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, the second targetting overseas Christians this year after the March 17 grenade attack on a Protestant church in Islamabad's diplomatic enclave.
Meanwhile, US officials in Islamabad confirmed reports that they had shut down the consulate in Karachi following a security alert. The consulate had opened recently after a June car bomb attack nearby killed 12 people.
The officials said the Karachi consulate had been closed for an indefinite period and its staff had been sent home on Monday.
France had shut down its consulate in the port city in July and moved its staff to the British consulate citing security reasons.
