Bihar too bans the sale of 'gutkha'

Taking a cue from other states, the Rabri Devi government on Tuesday decided to ban the sale of chewing tobacco [gutkha] in Bihar with immediate effect.

Announcing this, Health Minister Shakuni Choudhary told reporters that Rabri Devi ordered the ban after consulting him and other top health officials in the state.

He said the state health department, following the chief minister's instructions, would initiate measures to implement the ban across the state.

The state government took the decision to protect the lives of people from diseases being caused by the consumption of gutkha, he said.

Earlier, the chief minister had asked the health department and the chief secretary to study the measures taken by other states to ban gutkha.

Choudhary said the ban would be notified soon and stringent action would be taken against people violating the order.
