"President Musharraf has taken strong action in the war against terror, Al Qaeda or the Taliban, as well as taken steps to diminish cross-border incursions into Kashmir. President Bush is pleased with the actions Musharraf has taken," White House spokesman Ari Fleischer told reporters on Tuesday.
Fleischer was responding to a question on what message Secretary of State Colin Powell would be carrying to New Delhi after India's Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani appealed to the US to brand Pakistan a terrorist state following the recent attack in Jammu in which 29 people were killed.
Fleischer said the tension between India and Pakistan had reached a flashpoint twice this year, and claimed that it was defused chiefly because of US diplomacy.
"As a result of a lot of intervention and diplomacy by the president, state department, [and] Secretary Powell, the situation is much more defused", he said. "The United States will continue to actively work in the region."
