Britain eases India travel warning

Britain on Wednesday withdrew advice to its nationals to leave India, saying tensions had eased there.

The foreign office said in a statement that although "the risk of conflict between India and Pakistan remains", it no longer advised its nationals to leave India.

On Pakistan, however, the advice remained that Britons should leave "unless they have a compelling reason to stay and similarly have confidence in their security arrangements".

On June 5, the government had told British nationals to leave India and Pakistan, hardening its previous advice that they should "consider" leaving.

The foreign office estimates that there are up to 20,000 Britons in India.
