Country stands united against
Pak-sponsored terror: Sonia

Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Friday declared that the country stood united in countering Pakistan-sponsored terrorism, but asked the government to act responsibly, reach out to the international community and formulate a strategy which would stand the test of time.

"We have fundamental and unbridgeable differences with the Bharatiya Janata Party on social, political and economic issues, but we want the world to realise that we are one in countering Pak-sponsored terrorism. We will continue to extend our support to the government in its fight against terrorism and in restoring peace in Jammu and Kashmir," Gandhi said in her inaugural address at the All India Congress Committee special session being held at the specially created 'Sadbhavna Nagar' in New Delhi.

Describing the situation in the country as "very delicate," Gandhi said: "We should be ready for tougher times ahead. No such step should be taken that would not get positive results. We should make diplomatic efforts to project our side to the international community," she said.

The Congress president, however, expressed disappointment that no evidence had been found of government's intent to take any concrete steps.

Despite the deployment of troops along the western border for the past six months, Gandhi said, there was no let-up in terrorist activities and no change in Pakistan's Kashmir policy.

Referring to the communal riots in Gujarat, Gandhi said the violence has "damaged the country's secular foundations and tarnished India's image."

She declared that in the coming assembly elections in Gujarat, the Congress "will go to the people with the message of social peace, harmony and religious amity."
