Assistant Commissioner of Police R B Yenam was on Tuesday night arrested by Mumbai police for his alleged complicity in the multicrore fake stamp papers scam.

Yenam was ACP in Navi Mumbai division of the police commissionerate.

According to the police he allegedly had links with the crime syndicate of prime accused Abdul Karim Telgi.

Yenam would be produced in a court on Wednesday.

The police had registered seven cases against the Telgi syndicate in the city. ACP Yenam is allegedly involved in one of these cases.

Yenam was inspector in Dharavi unit of crime branch in 1998 when one of the seven fake stamp paper case was probed by him.

Along with him, Assistant Police Inspector Dilip Kamath and Police Inspector Dattatraya Dal were also posted in the same unit of the crime branch. Both Kamath and Dal have already been arrested in the scam for allegedly going soft on Telgi, sources said.

The seven cases were registered in 1995 but were not investigated allegedly due to the police lapses. In view of the SIT probe ordered by the government on high court directives, these cases are now being reinvestigated and arrests are being made.

He is the eighth policeman to be arrested in this case. Others are R S Sharma, former Mumbai police commissioner, Sridhar Vagal, joint commissioner of policeĀ  (intelligence), ACP Gokul Patil, inspectors Dattatraya Dal and Vashist Andale, API Dilip Kamath and sub-inspector Prabhakar Kakade.
