The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday killed a militant who they said was responsible for an attack on a police station in the Surankote area of Poonch district on Tuesday morning in which a Special Police Officer was killed and four injured.

The police identified the slain militant as belonging to the Lashkar-e-Tayiba suicide squad. The militant threw a Chinese-made grenade and opened indiscriminate fire on the police station at around 0920 hours IST, official sources told PTI.

In the attack, a SPO Munawar Hussain was wounded. He died while being airlifted by helicopter to Jammu for specialised treatment.

The militant, who escaped from the police station premises, was, however, cordoned off 500 meters away in Hardi Mohalla. In the gunbattle that lasted four hours, the militant was killed around 1400 hours, the sources said.

One AK rifle, seven grenades, one wireless set, eight magazines, one pistol and some explosive material was recovered during search in the area, they said.

Meanwhile, one militant was killed in an encounter at Nagni in Kishtwar tehsil of Doda district on Monday, the police said.

The encounter, they said, was still continuing when last reports came in.
