At least 16 people were killed and four injured when an explosion rocked a coal mine in southwest China Wednesday.

The blast occurred in Guizhou province, the official Xinhua news agency said.

A total of 49 miners were working underground when the explosion occurred, local officials said. The cause of the accident is under investigation.

A similar blast had devastated a coal mine in northwest China's Shaanxi province on Sunday, which killed 166 miners and injured over 40.
