Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Babasaheb Kupekar today suspended Shiv Sena MLA from Akot, Gulabrao Gawande from the House for rest of the winter session of Maharashtra Assembly.

Gawande had earlier in the day attempted to consume poison and poured kerosene on himself inside the House to protest the DF government's "apathy" towards scores of suicides by debt-ridden farmers.

The incident happened in the House when the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, Ramdas Kadam was demanding suspension of Question Hour and taking up of the farmers' issue.

Gawande suddenly moved into the well of the House with a bottle of kerosene in one hand and a poisonous liquid on the other. He poured kerosene on himself and tried to consume the poison but was overpowered by the members of both benches and the bottles were snatched. The shocked members, cutting across party lines, tried to pacify Gawande, who was later taken out of the House.

Following the incident, the Speaker Babasaheb Kupekar adjourned the House first for 10 minutes and when it reassembled, adjourned it till the duration of the Question Hour.
