Prisoners to be Gandhi-aware

Prisoners of various jails in Maharashtra and Punjab, 470 of them, will take an exam on the life and work of Mahatma Gandhi on October 2, the Gandhi Jayanti day.

The exam, to be organised by Gandhian groups under the unbrella of Bombay Sarvodaya Mandal would be based on books of Mahatma Gandhi - The story of my experiments with truth and Character and nation building, T R K Somaiya of Bombay Sarvodaya Mandal told Press Trust of India. Prisoners from Central Jail and Byculla Jail in Mumbai, Yerwada Jail in Pune, Yeotmal Jail, Dhule Jail and Jalgaon Jail would participate in the examination alongwith inmates of prisons in Patiala and Ludhiana, Somaiya said.

Those participating in the exams would be given awards and certificates. The Mandal would also organise lecture series on Gandhian thoughts and a screening of Richard Attenborough's movie on Gandhi, as part of the weeklong celebrations during Gandhi Jayanti.

An exhibition of books on life and works of Mahatma Gandhi would be organised in Mumbai, Dhule and Dombivali in Thane district. Apart from this, a Gandhi Peace examination would be held in which about 12,000 students from 140 schools and 35 colleges of different universities of Maharashtra would participate.
