The alleged killing of a boy sparked tension in the city leading to heavy stone pelting and torching of shops and vehicles by a group of people, which injured several people, including some policemen.

The trouble began when the victim, a class 11 student, was allegedly fired upon by a chemist following an altercation killing him on the spot, they said.

Later an enraged mob tried to attack the chemist and fought a pitched battle with police, who arrived on the scene.

Some shops and vehicles were torched and several people, including some police personnel, sustained injuries in the violence, sources said.

Heavy security has been deployed in the area and the situation was under control, police said.
