Do we care for our wildlife?

Earlier this week a water tanker knocked down an elephant, Laxmi, in Mumbai. She suffered spinal injuries and was transported with the help of crane to an animal hospital for treatment.

Death of an elephant

Laxmi died September 22.

A few days prior to this, a healthy, young tiger was killed at the periphery of Corbett National Park in Uttaranchal by poachers, never mind they are a protected species.

Which leads to the question, do our laws really protect our animals?

What should we as citizens do to protect India's defenceless, disappearing wildlife? Don't they as fellow living beings deserve a little of our attention and care?

Shouldn't we move the government to provide basic protection for animals from unnecessary cruelty?
