A CPI-M worker on Saturday succumbed to his injuries suffered during last week's violence along the Nandigram-Khejuri border, which prompted the ruling party in West Bengal to call a 12-hour bandh in the region on Monday to protest the killing.

Arun Mondal succumbed to gunshot injuries at the state-run SSKM hospital in Kolkata on Saturday, CPI-M sources said.

Mondal had been seriously injured in the incident on July 29 when bombs were hurled and firearms used by the rival groups.

The party's East Midnapore district unit on Saturday called a 12-hour bandh at Nandigram and adjoining Khejuri, a party stronghold, they said.

Both Nandigram and Khejuri fall under the East Midnapur district.

Earlier on July 29, a CPI-M activist was killed during the clashes between the activists of the Trinamool Congress-led Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee and CPI (M) workers along the Nandigram-Khejuri border.

Meanwhile, the district magistrate called an all-party peace meeting at Nandigram on Monday to defuse the prevailing tension.

The area continued to be rocked by intermittent gun-battle and hurling of bombs since last night, police said.
