Officer shoots jawan dead in Kashmir

In the first case of fratricide in the New Year, a Junior Commissioned Officer allegedly shot dead a jawan in an army camp in the outskirts of Jammu, defence sources said on Monday.

The incident occurred on Monday night during a New Year's party at the camp of 22 mechanized infantry in Ratnuchak area officials said.

JCO Hari Krishan Panday allegedly fired at Om Inder Kumar after the duo entered into a verbal dual and scuffle in the barrack.

Officers and jawans who rushed to the barrack on hearing the gunshot found Naik Kumar lying dead in a pool of blood, they said, adding that the JCO was arrested.

Police has registered a case and begun investigations they said.

They added that the Army into the case has ordered a court of inquiry.

Both the persons involved in the incident were from Bihar, officials said.
