Two security personnel and an equal number of Lashkar-e-Tayiba terrorists were killed in a gun battle sparked by an attack by the terrorist outfit on an army convoy in Baramulla district.

The heavily-armed terrorists opened fire on an army convoy passing through Sheeri near police training school, 65 km from Srinagar around 1300 IST, a defence spokesman said.

He said in the initial attack of terrorists, one policeman was killed and four others were injured.

Army laid a cordon or the area from where the terrorists had opened fire and in the ensuing gun battle, both terrorists were eliminated, the spokesman said.

He said one army jawan was also killed in the exchange of fire between the two sides while another jawan sustained injuries.

The terrorists opened fire on security forces from across the river Jhelum from a hill-lock that led to the damage among security forces, he said.

The identity of slain terrorists was being ascertained, the spokesman said adding some arms and ammunition were recovered from their possession.

The Lashkar owned responsibility immediately after the attack.

In another incident, two suspected al Badr men were killed in an encounter with security forces in Khrew area of Pulwama district, the spokesman said.

The encounter broke out when the troops, during surveillance, observed two ultras moving suspiciously at Narbal in Khrew area on Thursday night, he said.

The ultras were challenged and in the ensuing exchange of fire, both of them were killed, he said.
