Two-year-old Lakshmi, who was operated upon to remove her parasitic conjoined twin, is on the road to recovery. She spent over an hour with her mother Poonam, a day after she was taken off the ventilator.

Dr Sharan Patil and his team of doctors, who performed the marathon 27-hour surgery, said Lakshmi was given milk for the first time after the surgery.

Dr Patil said, "She is doing fine, but we are continuing to monitor her."

He also said that the two-year-old will have to undergo physiotherapy before she starts walking normally.

Lakshmi's mother Poonam said she was very emotional when she saw her daughter.

"I held her hand throughout my meeting with her. It felt like a re-union," she said.

Meanwhile, doctors said Lakshmi was sleeping well and responding positively to the treatment. He, however, added that it may take some time before she is taken out of the Intensive Care Unit as she was still prone to infection.

Even as Lakshmi was on the road to recovery, good-wishes continued to pour in. An NGO has even offered to adopt Lakshmi, but it is unlikely that the parents will agree to the same.

The parents should have no problem in taking care of her as there are several organizations and firms, which are contributing funds -- the latest being a donation of Rs 7,77,777 from a private firm.
