The Supreme Court on Wednesday extended the interim custody of 20-day-old surrogate baby Manji, granted to her Japanese grandmother Yamada, till September 16.

A bench of Justices Arijit Pasayat and Mukundakam Sharma granted two weeks time to non governmental organisation Satya to explain its locus standi for seeking custody of the child.

The NGO had sought custody of the child on the ground that Manji was an abandoned child and Yamada had no right over her.

According to the NGO, Manji was born to a surrogate mother from Rajasthan by using sperms donated by the child's Japanese father.

But during the pregnancy of the surrogate mother, the Japanese couple had separated, leading to a crisis over the custody of the child.
