Delhi fake sting: Uma Khurana reinstated

School teacher Uma Khurana, who was dismissed by the Delhi government following her arrest six months ago in connection with a TV sting operation on sleaze, has been reinstated in service.

The Department of Education of the Delhi government decided to revoke her dismissal after she was given a clean chit by the court in the sting operation of a sex racket and approached the Delhi high court for her reinstatement.

"We have revoked her dismissal following her appeal. Her posting will be decided soon," a senior Delhi government official said.

Khurana was not available for comment but her lawyer Amit Kumar said she was 'very happy' at the decision.

She received a letter from the department on February 15 regarding her reinstatement asking her to join duty, Kumar told PTI.

"She has thanked all those who have given her the moral support and help during the difficult phase of her life," he said.

Khurana was dismissed from service following the airing of the sting operation which purportedly showed the teacher as running a prostitution racket of school girls.

However, the expose turned out to be 'fake' after it came to light that her business associate Virender Arora and a TV reporter Prakash Singh were allegedly framing her in it.

She was subsequently discharged by a city court on November 1, 2007 due to lack of evidence, but the government did not reinstate her.

Khurana was arrested on August 31 and was dismissed a day after. She had filed a petition in the high court on February 7 alleging that the department has failed to consider her plea of re-induction into the service.

The expose, aired in Live India channel, had sparked violent protests in the Walled City area. Khurana was also manhandled by a mob.

The high court, then, had taken suo-motu cognizance of the case and had asked the police to probe the incident in a fair manner.

She has alleged that various representations, seeking re-induction into the services, have been made to the DoE but she has not received any response.

'Because of the apathy and inaction shown by the NCT Government on the representations seeking reinstatement amounts to adding insult to the injury, as Khurana has already undergone so much mental agony and trauma,' she said in her petition.
