An association set up by the family members of the Uphaar tragedy - the All Victims of Uphaar Tragedy – on Tuesday moved a petition before the Delhi High Court seeking the enhancement of punishment of the two-year jail sentence awarded to the Ansal brothers in the fire tragedy case.

The petition comes close on the heels of Gopal and Sushil Ansal, owners of the Uphaar cinema hall, getting bail from High Court after the trial court sentenced them to two-year imprisonment for causing death due to a negligent act. In 1997, a fire in the Uphaar cinema hall in New Delhi had killed 59 people.

The cinema owners' appeal against their conviction in the trial court is also pending in High Court.

The association's petition is listed before Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul for hearing on Wednesday.

On November 23, a city court had sentenced Sushil Ansal and his brother Gopal -- the owners of the cinema hall – to two-year jail terms for causing death by their negligent act.

Three other accused were also sentenced to two years imprisonment. Seven others were sentenced to seven years' imprisonment.
