Get slim with yoga!

April 8, 2009
It has been proven that after a good work-out, especially yoga, your food cravings are suppressed due to the release of feel-good hormones. Even the nerve sensors on the tongue seemed to react to this hormonal flood.

An intense round of yoga is also found to be more effective than appetite-suppressant drugs. This happens for several reasons:

  • Major control glands like the hypothalamus and pituitary are tweaked. These are involved in hunger and satiety signals. Controlling them also helps control binge eating.
  • Also, the neck locks and massage at the throat work the thyroid, hiking metabolism so that the body is on a natural fat-burning spree.
  • Pressure on the liver encourages fat release.
  • Even static poses in yoga make you sweat and burn fat simply by using gravity to work your muscles.
  • Weight loss with yoga is more sustained, hence longer lasting unlike gimmicky diets or harmful or intense workouts that are not scientifically designed for you or personalised to suit you.
  • The emotional triggers that cause weight gain are controlled due to effect yoga has on your mind.

Here Shameem Akthar, yoga acharya, trained with the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center, leads you through four poses that help you with your weight loss goals.
